Treatment & Hazard Classes
What's the difference between H3 and H4 treated pine, and which do I need?
The main difference is where the timber will be used. H3 vs H4 treated pine comes down to exposure. H3-treated pine is designed for above-ground outdoor applications such as cladding, pergolas and trim, while H4-treated pine is suitable for in-ground or ground-contact applications like fence posts and landscaping. Learn more in our Understanding Timber Hazard Classes guide.
Is H3 treated pine suitable for outdoor and above-ground use?
Yes. H3-treated pine is specifically designed for above-ground external applications where the timber is exposed to weather but not in constant contact with the ground. It’s commonly used for cladding, screening, fascias and other exterior projects.
What is LOSP treatment and is LOSP-treated timber safe to handle?
LOSP stands for Light Organic Solvent Preservative. This treatment helps protect timber from termites, fungal decay and insect attack. LOSP-treated timber is safe to handle when used as intended and installed according to product recommendations.
Can I use treated pine for garden beds or where food grows?
If you’re wondering if treated pine is safe for garden beds, Woodhouse recommends TerraFrame H4-treated timber. It uses Micronised Copper Azole (MCA) treatment, which contains no added arsenic, unlike CCA products. Terraframe is Global GreenTag certified for use in sensitive environments, including vegetable gardens, playgrounds and schools.
Cladding & Weatherboards
What's the difference between primed pine cladding and weatherboards?
Many people compare primed pine cladding vs weatherboard, but weatherboards are actually a type of cladding. Cladding is the broader term for exterior materials that protect a building from the weather, while weatherboards are overlapping horizontal or vertical planks ā traditionally timber or fibre cement ā designed to shed water effectively.
What is pre-primed pine and do I still need to paint it?
Pre-primed pine has already been coated with a factory-applied primer, helping save time during installation. While it’s ready for painting, it still requires a quality top coat after installation to provide long-term protection against Australia’s harsh weather conditions.
Can I paint timber cladding a dark colour?
No. Choosing a dark coating may affect timber performance and void product warranties. Always check the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) requirements in our Painting Guide.
Lifespan, Painting & Maintenance
How long do treated timber products last?
The lifespan of treated timber depends on the product, installation and ongoing maintenance. Woodhouse Weatherproof products are backed by a 25-year warranty, while TerraFrame products carry a 50-year warranty. When correctly installed and maintained, both are designed to deliver decades of reliable performance.
How do I paint pre-primed exterior timber, and do I need to sand the pink primer off first?
When learning how to paint pre-primed pine, there’s no need to remove the factory-applied primer. Simply ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying the recommended top coats. For detailed preparation and painting advice, visit our Painting Guide.
How often should exterior timber be re-coated or maintained?
Timber cladding maintenance requirements vary depending on the coating system, exposure to weather and local conditions. High-quality paint systems can provide protection for many years, but regular inspections help identify when cleaning or recoating is required to keep timber performing at its best.
Sustainability & Certification
Is Woodhouse timber FSCĀ®-certified and sustainably sourced?
Yes. If you’re looking for FSCĀ® certified timber Australia, Woodhouse sources products from responsibly managed forests and holds FSCĀ® Chain of Custody certification. This helps provide confidence that certified timber products can be traced through a responsible supply chain.
What is VOC and is your timber low VOC?
VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds, which are chemicals that can be released from some building materials and coatings. Woodhouse offers products that support healthier building environments, including options recognised for low VOC timber performance, such as TerraFrame with Global GreenTag certification.
